Cyclone Ivan strikes Madagascar

On February 17, 2008 the tropical cyclone Ivan struck the eastern part of Madagascar killing 44 people and leaving nearly 145,000 homeless. After cyclone Fame in January, Ivan - with wind speeds of 230 km/hr – is yet the most destructive of this cyclone season affecting most parts of Madagascar, amongst others the rice-producing Alaotra Mangoro region, 150 km north east of Antananarivo.
Every year the island of Madagascar is hit by cyclones in January and February leading to devastating destruction and the outbreak of diseases.

Malagasy authorities have launched an appeal for international help.
