Forest destruction has reduced by eight-fold
in protected areas on the island of Madagascar.
Madagascar has reduced the deforestation of their protected forests
by eight-fold as Reuters reported on March 10, 2008. The rate
has decreased to 0.1 percent per year from 0.8 percent in the
1990s according to satellite images.
The main cause of deforestation in Madagascar is the logging of
trees for conversion into farmland and the burning of wood for
charcoal production.
Tree-planting, the involvement of communities and the extension
of reserves after the election of President Marc Ravalomanana
in 2002 have all contributed to a decreased rate of deforestation.
