MASOALA
How to get there:
Masoala is a peninsula at the northeast coast of the island. Whether
you can get there by Taxi Brousse depends on the state of the
road. You can't really know in advance whether it is possible
or not. Furthermore, you have to cross 6 streams by ferry. So
the safest way to get to Masoala is to go to Tomasina (Tamatave)
or Nosy Boraha (Ile St. Marie) by Taxi Brousse and from there
take a merchant ship to Maroantsetra or Anthala (just go to the
port and ask). Choose a ship that is made of steel and not of
wood and that is as big as possible. And be sure to bring along
enough water and a good book, because the journey will take longer
than they tell you anyway.
What you can do and see:
In Masoala you find the most preserved and untouched rain forest
of Madagascar. There are no streets on the peninsula, so you will
have to travel by foot. You can do one-day-trips or book one of
three different trekking tours across Masoala. These tours differ
heavily regarding price (we highly recommend to ask in advance
about possible additional charges along the way, like boat trips,
firewood, accomodations for night, etc.), but also in duration
(3-6 days), difficulty and time you spend in the actual National
Park. There, with some luck, you can see the red ruffed lemur,
helmet vangas, masoala pitcher plants (only at Cap Est) as well
as other species specific to this region. And if you take the
short but expensive trip (minimum transfer fee: 100000 MFG) to
the special reservation Nosy Be, the little island in front of
Maroantsetra, you might even see an Aye-aye.
At some places diving is also possible. The coral reefs are said
to be as beautiful as the nature ashore.
Housing:
No problems here. Maroantsetra and Anthala are pretty big cities
with many restaurants, shops and plenty of Hotels of all categories.
Along most trekking trails you will pass small villages where
you can rent a simple room (not in the National ParK itself).
Otherwise there is always space for camping if you have a tent.
