IVOLOINA
How to get there:
Ivoloina is a zoological garden near the city of Tamatave. To
get there from Tamatave take a Taxi Brousse to Ivoloina Village.
From there you'll have to walk about 30 minutes until you get
to the entrance of the zoo.
What you can do and see:
The rather small zoological garden is actually just one part of
what is called Project Ivoloina (Ivoloina means "where there
is bamboo"). The goal of this project is to make the regional
inhabitants sensitive to conservation issues as well as to expand
in-country captive breeding efforts for lemurs and other endangered
Malagasy fauna. In the zoo you will see mostly lemurs (some of
them are not kept in cages and will come very close), but also
snakes, chameleons, frogs and turtles.
Housing:
There is a camping site within the area and also a small bar/gift-shop
but besides that, there are no hotels or restaurants. But the
zoo is so close to Tamatave, that you can easily get there, visit
the zoo and go back to the city in half a day.
