UNIVERSITIES
Center for Conservation Biology, CCB
The CCB (Department of Biological Sciences at Stanford University)
conducts scientific and policy research to build a sound basis
for the conservation, management, and restoration of Earths
biotic resources, to evaluate factors that are leading to the
human predicament (declining environmental security,
increasing inequity) and to find practical solutions to that predicament.
Its research integrates biological with economic, anthropological,
legal, and other social science perspectives.

Center for International Earth Science
Information Network
Columbia Univesity's Center for International Earth Science Information
Network (CIESIN) works at the intersection of the social, natural,
and information sciences. The center specializes in on-line data
and information management, spatial data integration and training,
and interdisciplinary research related to human interactions in
the environment. You will find interesting articales on projects
involving Madagascar.

Duke University Primate Center
DUPCs mission is the preservation and study of endangered
prosimians through research, education, and conservation. Research
mainly includes: captive breeding, nutrition, social organization,
biomechanics, genomics, cognitive studies, systematics, physiology,
feeding adaptations, and special senses. Conservation includes
but is not limited to: (1) The study of wild populations for baseline
information; (2) Breeding rare species at Duke and in Madagascar;
and (3) Reintroducing rare species to protected areas in Madagascar.
The Center also has a commitment to increasing participation in
collaborative sustainable development programs in Madagascar.

Institute for the Conservation of
Tropical Environments, ICTE
The ICTE was established at the State University of New York at
Stony Brook by Dr. Patricia Wright to encourage and promote scientific
research, training, and conservation in the tropics. The ICTE
coordinates and catalogs the work of over 300 natural and social
scientists at Ranomafana National Park and other parts of Madagascar,
organizes and conducts biodiversity surveys and ecological assessments
of tropical ecosystems, and trains scientists at all levels through
field-based courses, collaborations, and academic exchanges.

Missouri Botanical Garden
Explore the exotic flora of Madagascar at the Missouri Botanical
Garden Web site. Web green thumbs can also view a plethora of
photographs, read papers on vegetation and biogeography, and peruse
a photo essay on biodiversity and conservation.
