| PROJECT ALAOTRA
Situation
Lake Alaotra and its surrounding marshes are home to a great number
of aquatic birds and more than 13 species of mammals, amongst
them the endemic lemur species of this region - the Alaotran gentle
lemur. The increasing human population of the region is also depending
on the lake and its natural resources. The marshy habitat is being
destroyed and transformed into rice fields at a very high pace,
threatening the survival of this unique lemur.

Goals
The goals of this project are mainly to involve the local population
in the care and concern of its natural resources. In the long
term this helps to conserve the natural marshy habitat for the
people of the region and for a self-sustainable population of
the Alaotran gentle lemur. To achieve these goals MWC operates
on different levels:
Module Nature Tourism:
By bringing nature tourism to the village of Andreba at the lakeshore,
MWC enhances the awareness of the importance of natural environment
through alternative incomes for the community.
